Ride for Gettysburg maintains tradition of success
SEPTEMBER 22, 2012
Details to come!

State Rep. Harry Readshaw, D-Allegheny, today said this past Saturday's 11th annual motorcycle Ride to Gettysburg was a great way to start off a second decade for the event. The ride was sponsored by the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education.
Readshaw said 312 riders made the trek from Harrisburg to Gettysburg, down from last year's 400, but the donation tally hardly reflected the reduction, coming in at approximately $12,375 compared to last year's $13,500, the most in the ABATE ride's history.
"Considering that up until that morning, the weather forecasts were predicting a rainy day, I think the turnout was great," said Readshaw. "Either they were dedicated to participate 'rain or shine' or they followed the much more optimistic morning forecast - they were there."
Half the proceeds from the ride go to the Pennsylvania Gettysburg Monuments Project. Readshaw founded the campaign in 1997 to repair and maintain the more than 140 monuments and markers commemorating the actions of Pennsylvanians at the epic 1863 battle.
The Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association will receive the other half of the proceeds. The GBPA, at 51, the nation's oldest Civil War battlefield preservation organization is presently involved in the preservation of the historic 145-acre Daniel Lady Farm on Hanover Road in Gettysburg. The effort includes restoring the house and barn the Confederates employed as field hospitals during the battle.
Almost all the Pennsylvania monuments and markers were erected by the veterans of the battle. Many were financed partly or in whole by appropriations from the General Assembly.

The Annual Motorcycle Ride also provides funds to restore the Daniel Lady Farm on Hanover Road. This farm is the northern most Confederate site that has been saved and is in the restoration process. It was a field hospital and protected the left flank of the Confederate line. Please go to www.gbpa.org to learn the amazing story of this historic site.
